About the Author(s)

Hi!! Im Lexi and I have this page on beetles. I dont know why, but i have taken a sudden interest in then. They now look cool instead of gross. I have two dogs, one at my moms and one at my dads because my parents are divorced and I have dog at each house. At my dads I have a bull dog named Deisel and the one at my moms is mutt named Penny.  A little while ago she had nine puppies. Deisel is my favorite dog because he's smart and loves to be around me. I also love cats and have 2, Gizmo and Coco.  The only sport I play is chess. My favorite food is chocolate and chocolate and chocolate.

            DIFFERENT BEETLE PICTURES AND INFO

More to come later so keep checking

There are more than 800,000 species of insects on earth, more than all the other plants and animals combined. Of this great number of insects, nearly half are beetles. Unlike other insects, beetles have a pair of leathery protective wings called elytra that cover their membranous flight wings. During flight, the elytra are spread apart and the two flight wings are unfolded and extended. Beetles come in a variety of shapes and colors, from red "ladybugs" and metallic green fig beetles to lightning beetles that glow in the dark and huge horned beetles resembling a miniature rhinoceros. Colorful beetles are used for jewelry and pins, and shiny tropical scarab beetles are strung together to make unusual necklaces. Beetles range in size from less than a millimeter  to  giants over six inches long.

     This is a Japanese beetle

Japanese beetles are native to east Asia but they were accidentally introduced into the United States in 1916.

Japanese beetles can live anywhere there is foliage to feed on. They often live on farms, cities, and even your garden. They feed on a variety of trees, shrubs, grasses, and nursery plants. The adults feed on the flowers, fruit, and leaves of plants like grapes, peach, rose, cherry, soybea, hibiscus, Indian mallow, dahlia, zinnia, horsechestnut, willow, elder.Japanese beetles travel and feed in groups. A swarm of beetles have been known to strip a peach tree in 15 minutes, leaving behind only bare branches and the fruit pits.Japanese beetles have a hard exoskeleton and chewing mouthparts. The adult beetle is 10-12 mm long with a metallic body thats usually green or copper and bronze wing covers. These hardened wing covers are actually modified wings called elyptra.  WOW!!

Introduced dung beetle, Onthophagus gazella Fabricius. Photo by Drees.  This is a Dung Beetle , cool huh?

Dung  beetles are between ½ and 1 inch long and are metallic blue-green and copper. The front of the head is flattened and golden bronze. The male has a long, curved horn extending from the front of the head, called a clypeus, while the female is slightly and has a tubercle. Their front legs are used for digging. They have their name because they eat horse poop and of course lots of dung.

LADY BUGS!!! Yes, they are in fact beetles

The ladybug lives in a wide variety of habitats. Any place where there are plants and aphids may attract this species. Ladybugs are most commonly found from the beginning of spring until the cool sets in fall. When it starts to become cool outside, ladybugs look for sheltered places so they can hibernate. I didnt know they could until now. The lady beetle is carnivorous. Both the adult and larval stages feed on insects harmful to plants, such as aphids. Adults can be known to eat up to 100. Rather than using any complicated methods for eating its prey, the ladybug kills its prey outright and then devours it. (And I always used to think they were nice and cute)

A lady bug video of a nine spotted ladybug

Plant Bug - Coleomegilla maculataA Pink Spotted Lady Beetle

I looked these up because I like the color. Pink Lady Beetles can be from from pink to light red in color, and they have twelve black spots on their elytra, those are wing covers, and pronotum, thats the middle part behind the head. Since two of these black spots are the elytra, when a pink lady beetle opens its wings, it looks like it has  fourteen spots ,six on each wing cover.

Pink lady beetles are actually ladybugs just like the more familiar red and black-spotted species and even have the rounded shape of a ladybug. The bright colors of Pink Lady Beetles and other ladybugs are a form of aposematic coloration that meant to warn  predators that they taste nasty and can be toxic to little animals. Birds and animals will normally avoid insects with black and bright orange, red, pink, or yellow on them.

This is a Spotted Cucumber Beetle

The spotted cucumber beetle is yellow-green with twelve black spots, a black thorax, and yellow abdomen. The grown up beetles are about half a centimeter long.  When its an adult it eats crops like cucumbers, soybeans, cotton, beans and many others. When its a larvae, which is called the southern corn rootworm, it tunnels through the roots of little plants, killing them. I think it looks kinda cute, like lady bugs.

This is a Red Milkweed Beetle

Milkweed beetles feed on milkweed plants. The larvae feed on the roots and stems, the adults on the leaves. you look closely at a milkweed beetle you will see that it has one pair of eyes above the antennae and another pair below. They have black spots on upper thorax and different patterns of black dots and streaks on red fore wings and a long tubular body. Milkweed beetles are found wherever there is milkweed.

Green Tiger Beetle - Cicindela sexguttata  Here's a Six-Spotted Green Tiger Beetle

They are a green beetle with long, thin legs and long antennae. Fore wings sometimes have six or more large white spots along the rear edge. They live on paths and sunny areas in forests. They are about 18mm long. It eats a variety of different insects.

Soldier beetle (Chauliognathus lugubris). [Credits : Peter Firus, Flagstaffotos] Soldier Beetle

There are 3500 different species of soldier beetles.  They have slender, soft-bodies that are brown or black and trimmed like a soldier’s uniform with red, yellow, or orange. The adults range between 5 and 15 mm and are normally found on veggies. Some soldier beetles have a pair of long fleshy filaments attached to the mouthparts, the filaments are used for feeding on pollen and nectar. Other species are carnivorous and feed on other insects.

Stag Beetles Fighting   Stag Beetles, these kinds are so awesome!

Stag Beetle is common name for beetles that have these cool long antlerlike mandibles, which are jaws, used in fights. These mandibles can be as long as the beetles body!!! Some of the tropical species are as big as 4 in. The females have smaller jaws that they use to dig holes in rotting wood to put their eggies in. Stag beetles are usually black, brown, bright red,or green. Even though they have huge jaws, they can fly. About 900 species are found all around the world. Stag beetles like to live in dank forests where a lot of rotting logs are found.  Go on youtube to see them fight, they dont stop until the other is dead!

 Dermestidae

Dermestidae are often referred to as skin beetles. Other names other names it has are larder beetle, hide or leather beetles, carpet beetles, and khapra beetles. There are about 500 to 700 species worldwide. They can be  from 1–12 mm. Adults are round oval shaped bodies covered in scales. The clubbed antennae fit into deep groove. Most feed on dry animal or plant material like  skin or pollen, animal hair, feathers, dead insects and natural fibers. A lot are found in animal carcasses, and others can be found in bird, bee, or wasp nests.  Also some species are pest and can cause millions of dollars in damage to natural fibers in homes and to businesses.

Goliathus cacicus The Goliath Beetle

The Goliath Beetle is one of the largest and heaviest beetles in the world. They can mainly be found in the tropics of Africa. They feed on dead plant matter, sap, fruit, sugary foods and dung. They have sharp claws to penetrate and pierce stems and vines, to to get to the sap. They are known to grow up to four and a half inches long. Males have a horn on their head used to battle other males, but females don't have one. They are usually black and white, but they come in a variety of colors including brown and yellow.

Another goliath beetle

Bark beetle (Dendroctonus valens) [Credits : William E. Ferguson] This is a Bark Beetle

They are usually under 6 mm  long, brown or black in colour, and usually very destructive. The male and female bore into a tree and form an egg chamber. Some times, as many as 60 females are found with each male. The female deposits her eggs in niches along the sides of the chamber. After the eggs hatch, the larvae bore away from the chamber, forming a characteristic series of tunnels. Each larva pupates at the end of its tunnel and emerges as an adult through a hole bored in the bark. Different species of bark beetles attack particular trees, damaging roots, stems, seeds, or fruits.

Featherwing Beetle

Featherwing beetles are tiny beetles with long filaments attached to the reduced membranous area of their wings. They live in many tropical regions worldwide and can usually be found in various moist and decomposing organic materials. Female featherwing beetles frequently develop from unfertilized eggs, and i have no idea what that means but if you do tell me. They are worlds smallest beetles and are 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm.

 Blister Beetle

Blister beetles contain about 2500 species. Florida has 26 species, only a small fraction of the total number in the U.S., but nearly three times that in the West Indies. Adult beetles are feed especially on plants. Most adults eat only the flower parts, but some eat leaves as well. Larvae of most genera enter the nests of wild bees, where they consume both immature bees and  the provisions of one or more cells. Adults are soft-bodied, long-legged beetles fully and abruptly constricted behind to form an unusually narrow neck. Body length ranges between 3/4 and 2 cm.

Grapevine Beetle - Pelidnota punctataGrapevine Beetle

The grapevine beetle measures about 1 inch in length, is reddish brown or tan with black marks around the margins of the wing covers.  The larvae is tan and can be found in decaying roots and tree stumps. The adult beetle chews on foliage and fruit, but damage is usually minor.  The larvae eat plant roots. They normally live in the woods. They are also called June Beetles. The insects pupate underground in the fall and emerge as adults the following spring.

Christmas Beetle

There are 35 species of Christmas beetles right across Australia, but most prefer the moister east and south easterly areas, especially near the coast. Many are glossy or brightly coloured and are often attracted to lights at night around Christmas time. They can be green or black, but most are golden brown.  Adult Christmas beetles feed on the leaves of Eucalyptus trees  and larvae of Christmas beetles live and develop in the soil where they eat decaying organic matter or plant roots. Towards the end of winter or in early spring the larvae move close to the soil surface to pupate. Adults emerge several weeks later, often after rain has softened the soil allowing them dig their way out. Adults then fly to the nearest food plant to feed and mate. The life cycle extends over one or two years, depending on species. Eggs are laid into soil or compost in the spring and early summer. Females are capable of laying between 20 and 40 eggs each.
